Charpentier and his Roman Masters
19.10.21 ___ 19:30
Château de Schwetzingen, Schwetzingen Allemagne
♢
With no predestination or vocation for music, the young Marc-Antoine Charpentier leaves Paris for Roma in the 1660’. A precursor in musical style, forms and harmony, Charpentier returns to Paris at the end of the 1660s, imbued with all encounters, interactions and concerts of his 5 years spent in Italy. He came back to France breathing new life and a fascinating inventiveness. This concert is an imaginary liturgy gathering musical pieces from various Offices, from the Tenebræ to the light of the Laud.
The interlacing between French and Italian music reveals the influences and borrowings : a Tenebræ Lesson of Charpentier is mirrored with a Répons of Bonifacio Graziani, composed for Saint-Louis-Des-Français in the years of the French composer’s arrival in Rome.
Charpentier certainly heard these pieces in the French Church in Rome where Graziani officiated; as he certainly heard, if not learnt from Carissimi: the Roman composer is believed to be Charpentier’s maestro during his Roman journey. Gathered in this concert, they highlight the Roman musical world of Charpentier before he himself composed upon his return, and the great influence that Italian music had on the French musical court.
