Thanks to the rediscovery of the repertoire through the Harmonia Mundi label, the musical treasures that Charpentier has left us are saved. These short sacred operas, gathered on 2 CDs under the title “Sacred Stories”, come from the time when he was music master of “Mademoiselle de Guise”. They are probably the result of the influence of the first Roman oratorios and resonate scenes from the Old and New Testaments in a very original way.

Sébastien Daucé and his Ensemble Correspondances have developed a version of the scores revealing all the picturesque sound paintings – we know from Charpentier’s own hand quite precisely which singers sang the solos, and how the choirs acted dramaturgically with and against each other. The composer was himself a countertenor, i.e. the highest tenor in French music, always on the stage.
